Canada Day Celebrations
Mayor Hazel McCallion kicked-off Canada Day celebrations across the city with her dynamic speech at the opening ceremony on the stage at the City Centre Lawn attended by Members of Council, Knights of Columbus and host, Jake Dheer from Rogers TV. “Mississauga’s Canada Day is about celebrating our nation’s 142nd birthday and connecting with our community,” said Mayor Hazel McCallion. “This exciting event demonstrates the diversity and spirit that makes our city a place where people want to be.” The event line-up at the City Centre featured the music of Kreesha Turner, Sloan and a fireworks display sponsored by Metro. Events included a Citizenship Court Ceremony, Bob the Builder, Mountain Bike Trixs and Slam Jam Dunk Show, Opera Luminata in the LAC and evening program hosted by Mike Bullard. In keeping with the City’s Living Green strategic pillar, free transit was offered across the city sponsored by Smart Commute Mississauga.
Colourful celebrations also took place in Streetsville at the Memorial Park. Streetsville Pipes & Drums and the Streetsville Cadet Corps started the event by leading a procession to the park. Justus Singers performed on the central stage where Mayor McCallion joined them. Entertainment for the crowd included clowns and face-painting artists. The Streetsville Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion gave everyone a chance to sign message boards to be sent to troops in Afghanistan.
Mayor McCallion celebrated at all city locations and cut the birthday cakes at each of them to the delight of the crowds.
